Dear Parents,
I would like to welcome both you and your student to Pre-Algebra 7 Honors at Santiago Charter Middle School. Together we will discover concepts and ideas and explore the fascination of mathematics. My educational philosophy is based on responsibility – responsibility placed on each student for what he/she chooses to learn and how to behave, with full understanding of the consequences of each choice. Our job is to be a learning facilitator and encourage each student to reach his/her full potential as a responsible learner and decision maker. In my class, our management system emphasizes a positive classroom environment where all students have the best opportunity for learning and growth with an assertive discipline system based on mutual respect: In most cases, students make positive choices. At these times, students can earn verbal recognition, thank you cards, positive comments on report cards or progress notes, and most importantly a good learning experience. However, if a student should chose to make a poor choice, the following will occur: Name recorded – warning One check – 15 minute detention: student/teacher conference Two checks – 15 minute detention: parent contact Three checks – referral to office*** **A referral will result in an N in citizenship on trimester report cards. Pre-Algebra is a course designed to present and prepare students for entry into Algebra the following year. To be a successful student, daily understanding and good organizational skills are a must. Students must be actively involved in their learning, come well prepared and ready for class, having studied, completed all assignments and prepared to ask questions. Grading is based on a standard grading scale. Grade Percentage A 90 – 100+ % B 80 – 89.9 % C 70 – 79.9% D 56 – 69.9% F Below 56% Grade Percentage Citizenship Grade Assignment Completion A 90 – 100+ % O 95% B 80 – 89.9 % S 80 – 94.9 % C 70 – 79.9% N 70 – 79.9% D 56 – 69.9% U Below 70% F Below 56% Because the emphasis of this program is on student understanding and ability to apply skills and concepts in various situations, cheating is counterproductive and will not be tolerated. Any student caught cheating will automatically receive a U on their report card for academic dishonesty. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us at school or by email.
